The English lantern clock, also called Bedpost or Birdcage, came into existence circa 1600 and was based on earlier types of wall clock, probably derived from central European models. Very fine examples of these clocks continued to be made on a large scale for two hundred years and they are now very much sought after as collectors pieces and they are truly in a class of their own.
