James Arthur was born in Ireland in 1842 and came to the United States in 1871, his skills with machinery and fine construction had led him to an interest in timepieces and their components. Revised and enlarged edition with nearly one hundred illustrations (black & white) consisting of photographs and drawings of rare clocks and watches of all period from all over the world. Daniel Webster Hering was curator of New York University.
